DevOps/Software Engineer

Fort Meade, MD

Technical Team Lead

An active TS//SCI clearance with polygraph is required for this role

👋🏼 Hey!

Bitwise is a leading provider of mission-focused intelligence solutions that advance national security for the Intelligence Community and Department of Defense. We're a small and growing company, so you can expect to hop in on the ground floor with us and be a consequential member of the team. You'll be more than a contract performer for us — you'll also be asked for ideas to improve our company and advance your career, and you'll contribute to our team culture. We value growth and community above almost all else, so we gather regularly for game nights, happy hours, tech talks, and plenty more. We think you'll like it here!

Remember, Bitwise is not a cult. 🖖🏼

🎯 What We Look For

Bitwise hires talented engineers who are driven by purpose and who value a culture of technical excellence, growth, and overall wellness. We deliver new and innovative intelligence solutions to our customers at the very forefront of our country's national security missions. And we do it every single day. Our work matters, and so will you.

We ask that every new hire be able to:

  • Contribute meaningful thought leadership — if not right away, over time
  • Interact with our customers and earn their confidence in your abilities
  • Be detailed, even if that means taking a little more time to get it right
  • Contribute their ideas and ideals to improve all aspects of our company
  • Allow us to invest in their education so we both grow together
  • Know and live our core values every single day

💡 About this Role

We're looking for an experienced Technical Team Lead to guide the Mission Intelligence (MI) team in delivering data engineering, analytics, and automation solutions that enable enterprise-wide, data-driven decision-making. This team operates a business intelligence platform that is mission-critical — and your primary charge will be ensuring that platform stays reliable, available, and high-quality.

In this role, you'll serve as both a technical leader and a force multiplier for your team. You'll work directly with stakeholders to gather requirements, assess available data, and architect solutions that surface the metrics that matter most. You'll break complex challenges into clear, actionable steps and keep the team moving forward by removing technical blockers and managing expectations along the way.

You'll define task scope through solid documentation and tracking systems, champion site reliability engineering practices across the operational platform, and mentor junior software engineers and data scientists as they grow. You'll also own project management deliverables — agendas, meeting notes, design decision records — keeping the team aligned and the mission on track.

If you're someone who leads with both technical depth and strong interpersonal skills, and who thrives at the intersection of engineering leadership and hands-on problem-solving, this is the role for you.

📋 Requirements

  • 12 years of relevant experience, or 16 years in lieu of a B.S. in a technical discipline
  • B.S. in a technical discipline (or 4 additional years of experience in place of degree)
  • Experience leading technical teams in a hands-on capacity
  • Ability to gather stakeholder requirements, assess data availability, and translate both into actionable solutions
  • Experience with enterprise-scale software deployment architectures
  • Familiarity with site reliability engineering (SRE) principles and practices
  • Strong customer service orientation with effective interpersonal skills for working across diverse backgrounds and skill sets
  • Willingness to produce and maintain internal and customer-facing documentation
  • Active TS//SCI clearance with polygraph

🌟 Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Apache NiFi
  • Experience with Elasticsearch and Kibana
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes
  • Knowledge of map-reduce analytic environments (e.g., Hadoop)
  • Understanding of end-to-end SIGINT collection and analysis systems
  • Experience with production CNO capabilities and operations
